NEWISLANDS LOGO DESIGN:

TORIA's first installments for the MONOTOR collection. Check out her vinyl toy version as part of the series, ltd mono screen prints and learn more about some of the new pieces yet to be shown.

"The constraints to this band of work is that each piece to the MONOTOR collection is of course one colour, black. Each original illustration is created by freehand drawing with ink pen or permanent marker depending on the surface. There are no pencil sketches first, no trial runs, just images and scenes straight out of my head first time round. Often with pre-empted ideas, occasionally by the lush process of creating from the sub conscious. As this is a collection there are elements and styles that run throughout to tie this body of work together.

The first piece to be added is an illustration created for screen print with a limited run produced. Entitled "Absynthe makes the heart grow fonder", this piece has been reproduced to form a character for the

vinyl toy MUNNY.

The first T-shirt design is ready to be screen printed, aptly named "Spikey Fu". Finally one skateboard deck is also complete".

There will be 2 defaced acoustic guitars, 1 snowboard, 1 surf board and a collection of prints and canvases, yet to be added. So keep dropping by to see the artwork finished and see which pieces will be added to limited runs for the shop.

What does the summer have in store for Toria and her endeavours with sound? With new mixes and creative DJ shows, here's an insight to the finer details, the sound and the tools behind the noise...

"During the past few months the focus has been on developing my sound with the instruments I feel most comfortable and developing my production skills. I have been getting to grips with Ableton Live for producing. I previously worked on Cubase but Ableton has so much more scope. I'm still learning with my instruments and kit so every session can be an assault on the brain.

I write lyrics as and when they pop in to my head, I just start repeating a line in my head a hundred times till I write the thing down. When I first start to create a track I create hooks either on my bass guitar, my kaosolator or midi keyboard.

I usually just record heaps of hooks in abletons session view. Then fine-tune the bits I want to keep, at this point I will work out which lyrics that I think will work best. I love electronic noises and synth sounds so the birth of a track might spurt simply from a sound effect I just created. I like the process to be fun and feel organic, hyporactive and creative.

As soon as I feel bogged down with technical shit, or find myself in some manual its time to call it a day and usually pick up my little Uke and bash out some random stuff that takes my mind off things.

I love my Uke for that, I'm still learning but still the sound that comes from it is so calming. It's great escapism, my mind wanders to the beach and to a great day surfing, until police sirens bring me back to the East end."

New boys on the block NEWISLANDS are having quite a few months, touring the UK for club NME, BBC introducing and XFM's Matt Horne sessions... Heres a sneak peek at the new Logo...
